30 Years, 30 Workshops

With this 2007-2008 season, BCCF celebrates its 30th year serving the choral community in British Columbia. The Board has set itself a challenge - to create, over the course of the season, THIRTY events that will bring singers together in music-making, and present the federation to the province.

Help us make this a reality - check out just some of the ideas we can help you with today.

The BCCF wants to see choral music happening around the province. Check out our list of events to the right to find one near you!

Grants are available to help create events that are open to all singers in a region; advice (but not finance) is available to choirs who want to hold an in-house event.

If you have an idea for a choral event in your area, please contact your local BCCF Board representative for help, or Brigid Coult, BCCF Project Manager - projectmanager(a)bccf.com.

Possible BCCF events that YOU could help to host:

VOCAL workshops

1. Bring in a clinician for a day. You could choose to focus on

  • vocal technique issues
  • reading skills
  • specific repertoire (perhaps a mass or an oratorio)
  • mixed repertoire
  • repertoire for a specific choir type: church music, gospel, jazz etc
  • certain singers: music for men's or for women's choirs

2. Invite a choir to come to your region, to offer a concert and an associated workshop - on their concert repertoire, on yours, or on something new.

3. Create a day for children - perhaps a Boys' Day or a Girls' Day

4. Help bring high-school singers together - offer a cool day of world music or vocal jazz

ADMINISTRATIVE workshops

Choirs don't run on music alone - there's a lot of background work that goes into a successful choir. Share your skills, tips and horror stories at a workshop that might offer some of the following (depending on time):

  • Management structure and board issues
  • Legal stuff; to incorporate or not? Insurance?
  • Contracts, negotiations, fees for professionals (from both sides)
  • Recruitment ideas
  • Library management
  • Secrets of good financial management
  • Charitable status, gaming funds, grants
  • Publicity; building your audience
  • Travel, workshops, retreats
  • Recording - or not...

CONCERT events

1. Bring together as many choirs as possible in your area and have a PARADE OF CHOIRS. Help is available to organize something like this effectively.

2. Twin with a choir in your community and share concerts and audiences.

3. Twin with a choir from somewhere else in BC and do a road-trip; perhaps in the same season or in alternating seasons.

4. Do some Random Acts of Choral Music - take your choir somewhere unexpected (on the docks, in the local bank, at the airport...) and sing a couple of numbers. Get someone to film you!

Events like this don't happen out of the blue. If you think there'd be interest in a BCCF event involving around YOUR choir, please do your bit to make it happen!
